Bimbo debuted in the Madrid Protocol which came into effect yesterday, as it was the first to submit an application for registration of trademarks for the brands Bimbo and Takis in about 50 countries under this agreement.

During the presentation of the seminar "Mexico and its accession to the Protocol related to the Madrid Agreement Concerning the International Registration of Brands"Daniel Servitje, CEO of Grupo Bimbo, said in case of receiving the registration, these brands would be protected in over 90 countries.

“The first two brands that are being requested in the Madrid Protocol are Takis and Bimbo in about 50 countries, we already have registration of these brands in around 39 countries, but with these agreements, we will be able to extend them to 89 countries”.

“It certainly represents important savings in the registration cost, about 30 to 40 percent, but mostly we won a lot of time in agility, we pass to have to do these registrations through correspondents in each country, to do it here in Mexico City, in our language and with a single payment”, he said.

At the time signing the registration for his brands, Mr. Servitje pointed out that for Bimbo, the intellectual property it´s a very important and valuable asset, that is why he makes this corporate effort for its protection.

Miguel Ángel Margáin, CEO of the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) said that Mexico becomes the fourth largest spanish-speaking country that joins the Madrid Protocol.

This brought the total number of members in the international trademark system amounts to 89, resulting in an expansion in the coverage of the system.

Binying Wang, deputy director of industry brands and designs of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) said that internationally the Madrid Protocol has achieved significant results; 2011 was the year with the highest number of international applications for trademark registration to date, with a number of 42, 270 applications.
