The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), through the General Direction for Air Quality, conducted the third edition and relaunch of the “Transporte Limpio” program. This voluntary program, jointly organized with the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT), is aimed at promoting efficient, competitive and environmentally friendly freight and passenger transportation companies.

During the award ceremony, Ana María Contreras Vigil, General Director for Air Quality at SEMARNAT, announced the new strategies and guiding principles of the “Transporte Limpio” program, including the creation of a national network for training in economizing driving, the design of a certification scheme, and the update of the transport emissions assessment program. This scheme will be also adopted at the state level and synergies between entities related to the transport sector will be promoted. As part of the same event, representatives of the National Association of Producers of Buses, Trucks and Trailers (ANPACT) and the National Association of Private Transport (ANTP) signed a commitment aimed at strengthening this Program. The commitment’s goal is to significantly reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants in the industry.

Committed companies

Bimbo was one of the awarded companies. The distinction recognized the company’s effort in reducing the environmental footprint of its transport and distribution operations.

Moreover, SEMARNAT appointed the firm as the host of the event at its Azcapotzalco plant in recognition of the results that the firm has obtained in the framework of this program since 2009.

The adoption of green technologies, and the design and use of more efficient configurations, also allowed Femsa Logística, Coca-Cola Femsa and OXXO to be recognized by the “Transporte Limpio” program. These companies avoided more than 45,000 tons of CO2 during 2012.

Coca-Cola Femsa reported that its fleet reduced its CO2 emissions by 44,4 percent, or 24,976 tons, in 2012, while Femsa Comercio achieved 9.3 percent, meaning, 2,412 tons. Femsa Logística registered a reduction of 21.5 percent, which translates into 18,029 tons of CO2. Other companies with remarkable results were Chrysler de México, Grupo Lala, Fletes México Chihuahua, Fletes y Transporte Ruiz, Mercedes-Benz and Transportadora Consolidada.

The “Transporte Limpio” program is currently composed by 137 companies including freight and passenger transportation firms, user companies and technology suppliers
