Grupo Bimbo announced in a press conference today the issuance of the first Clean Energy Certificates for Distributed Generation, once again reaffirming its leadership in sustainability and the reduction of its environmental footprint.

This has been accomplished thanks to the collaboration of different participants such as the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), Enlight, Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), Isepsa and Engie. Collectively, they have been able to take this important step to benefit the planet and future generations.

This sustainability milestone will contribute to achieving Mexico’s clean energy goal of using 50% clean energy by 2050. In addition, it will help qualified users and companies from the retail electricity market fulfill their obligation to purchase at least 5% of their energy from clean sources in 2018.

During the press conference, Francisco Avelar, Director of Financial Planning and the head of Grupo Bimbo’s renewable energies initiative, stated, “We at Grupo Bimbo wanted to take this first step and once again be agents of change in terms of sustainability. We know that there are many companies that are concerned about the environment and must also offset their emissions.”

He added, “We would like to invite other companies to join this initiative and hope Clean Energy Certificates will be an incentive for them to implement sources of distributed generation renewable energy. Rather than simply talking about environmental impact, through this initiative they may actually find a way to achieve the goal.”

Manuel Ahumada, Commercial Director of Enlight, stated, “We take pride in having managed Mexico’s first Clean Energy Certificates for distributed generation for Grupo Bimbo. Initiatives like those recognized today reinforce the benefits of solar energy for Mexican companies and homes to impel the planet towards sustainability.”

Guillermo García Alcocer, the Commissioner-President of CRE, congratulated Grupo Bimbo for setting a milestone in the development of renewable energies in Mexico. He said that, thanks to companies’ commitment to the environment, they will be able to achieve the goals established by Mexican legislation concerning electrical-energy generation through clean sources.

He commented, “Clean Energy Certificates (CEL) are the Mexican Government’s tool for ensuring that the generation and consumption of electricity in Mexico become cleaner and cleaner every day, in keeping with our national goals and our international commitments.”

Grupo Bimbo’s strategy for sustainability focuses its efforts on four lines of action related to care for the environment: reduction of its carbon footprint, reduction of its water footprint, waste management and natural capital.

It should be noted that last September Grupo Bimbo announced during New York Climate Week that it has joined RE100 and affirmed its commitment to using only renewable sources of electrical energy by 2025.
