Grupo Bimbo presents its water conservation Global Results

In 2013 Grupo Bimbo used 14.94% less water than in 2009. This amount is equivalent to 287 olympic-size swimming pools.

In commemoration of the World Water Day, Grupo Bimbo, the leading baking goods company in the world, informed about the main actions undertaken to reduce the firm’s water footprint.

Alejandra Vázquez, Sustainability Manager at Grupo Bimbo, underscored that the firm’s water consumption in 2013 was 4,499,772 m3, 14.94% less than in 2009. “The many initiatives undertaken, have allowed us to save 718,347 m3 of water in 2013. This figure is equivalent to 287 olympic-size swimming pools”.

Regarding the results achieved by organization, Bimbo Bakeries USA consumed 17.52% less water. In Mexico, Organización Bimbo used 1,177,741 m3 of water in 2013, saving 12.84% in comparison to 2009. Meanwhile, Organización Barcel used 474,335 m3 over the same year, with savings of 6%. Aware of the magnitude of the global challenge in water conservation, Grupo Bimbo’s goal is to reduce its water consumption for production processes in 17% by 2015. In order to achieve this, the firm has installed rainwater collection systems and centers for residual water treatment in its plants and distribution centers. In addition, the company has substituted air compressors and refrigeration compressors for air-cooled equipment.

“Some years ago, we decided to strengthen our efforts for reducing our water footprint by replicating our best practices along the 19 countries where we operate. Today, our goal is very clear: we are committed to become a model in environmental sustainability by 2015”, said Alejandra Vázquez.

The sum of Grupo Bimbo’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint have allowed the firm to stand out as a 100% sustainable company, committed with the environment in its daily operations, as well as along its value chain.
